After a long week of anticipation Saturday finally came and it was time to chase some cottontails. We released the hounds and lickety split, the dogs jumped a rabbit, and the hunt had begun.
At first, it was the usual run; a single rabbit, but then it sounded as if dogs were barking in different directions. A SPLIT TRACK! How exciting to hear! Eventually, one of the rabbits ran into a hunter expecting its return. Pow! Pow! The rabbit was finished, but there was still yet another sly rabbit on the run!
Shotgun shells and .22's flew as the rabbit circled past. The rabbit was hit, and excited dogs ran it down, caught it, and it was wrenched from the dogs by a hunter...dead as a door nail!
Sooner than you could say "Jumping Jiggly Jelly Bean", the hounds had another rabbit bounding through the briars. Like all rabbits, there are fast and slow, wily and dumb. This particular rabbit? Well...it could be smarter. It ran a short circle and was taken in about five minutes.
After walking amongst briars and stomping on clumps of grass, it finally produced a rabbit. Out of the briars came a scrambling rabbit. It escaped the dogs and a few hunters. Now, it was be-lining towards a young hunter who pulled his gun up, swung and squeezed the trigger. What a surprise, the rabbit was dead, but ROLLED head over heels.
Another successful day of rabbit hunting was had by all, and another day of hunting is what we look forward to all week.
